To shampoo or not to shampoo?

We use shampoo & conditioner.

However, we avoid shampoo with Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) or any of it's other names & Propolyne Glycol in the ingredient list. (If you want to know what we use email us). These two ingredients are both stored in the body's organs & have potentially harmful, long term effects on the body.

We began avoiding them after we discovered what they could do to us.

Propylene Glycol
  • affects liver and kidneys suspected of causing abnormalities;
  • central nervous system depression,
  • skin and eye irritant,
  • a carcinogen in trials with experimental animals,
  • a teratogen and the cause of adverse reproductive effects.

It is also found in:
shampoo, cosmetics, hand/body lotion, industrial anti-freeze, moisturiser, hair conditioners, soap, baby-wipes, detergent, hand cream, hair dye, mascara, antibiotics, medications.

SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate)
  • can cause tissue damage that could result in liver, brain, heart and lung damage in the long term;
  • can cause cataracts;
  • causes improper eye development in children (effects the protein structure of the eyeball),
  • can cause degradation of the immune system;
  • severe skin irritation and drying of the skin; (some people find their back acne clears up when they stop using it.)
  • hair loss and contact eczema;
  • damages DNA within the cells,
  • in toothpaste it can cause mouth ulcers,
It is found in: Toothpaste, hand & body wash, shampoo, bubble bath, hair conditioner, moisturiser, emollient cream, mascara, industrial cleaners, antibiotics

Many CFS sufferers claim they see great changes in their health just stopping the toxic load from personal health products like shampoo & conditioner. We did.

So far our kids don't use any at all. Their hair is lovely (although the the boys have a little cradle cap on the scalp). I'll be interested to see if they need it in the long run (maybe the sweaty teenage years?).

I have a sister who only washes her hair with water. I'm not sure how it goes in summer with chlorine pools & salt water but it looks quite lovely.

What do you do?

You can take care of cradle cap if you massage a little baby oil onto the scalp before bath time. (Did I mention I'm the mom of six kids? ;) )

Brilliant! Does it come off by itself or do I need to help it somehow?

I answered my own question. Tonight I massaged the boys heads with baby oil before bathtime. Then made them lie down while I soaped their heads with a face cloth (just sunlight soap). I dried vigorously with a towel & then used a baby comb to comb it gently away from the scalp. It took less than 5 mins combing & it's all gone! (My boys loved it - they have longish hair at the moment, They both had a crew cut in January & that was the last time their hair has seen scissors- they've never actually had their hair brushed or combed (hence the cradle cap I'm guessing) & they sat there delighted by the sensation.)
Thanks for the tip!
